Burnt Tree (Burnt Tree)
Located in Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju, this remarkable zelkova tree tells a story of resilience. It is said that on November 21, 1948, the tree was scorched during a military operation that saw the village burn, yet it miraculously survived by sprouting new life from one side. Today, Burnt Tree presents a striking sight where the charred, dead wood coexists with vibrant, living branches. Alongside it, a Chinese toon tree—the offspring of another tree—has been sprouting and growing in tandem for decades, creating a unique scene of life intertwined with history.
